Change Your Self Talk and Watch the Fat Melt Away

The other day, my youngest daughter was in her room having a conversation with herself which startled me because she was really processing some stuff that happened to her at school (with herself).  I walked into her bedroom and here is how are conversation went:

Me: “girl who are you talking too?”

Daughter (with a puzzled look on her face): “no one”

Me: “no one? well stop talking to yourself” 

Daughter: “I’m not talking to myself”

Me: “yes you and cut it out.” 


Later on that evening I reflected on the conversation I had with my daughter and it dawned on me, I DO IT TOO, I talk to myself all the time.  We all do as a matter of fact.  From the moment we wake up, until we fall asleep at night we are constantly talking to ourselves. Who would've thought we had so much to say? Right? But we do!  Self-talk is a huge part of our lives and we do it all day long.  

The beauty with self talk is that when it is positive and healthy, amazing things can happen. When self-talk is negative, life can be much more challenging than it has to be.  My daughter was having her private “self talk” when I bust in her room demanding that she stopped. What I didn’t realize, was that she as creating a space to connect with herself, creating her reality and being her own personal cheerleader. 

Our self talk, the conversations that we have with ourselves, in essence is who we truly are.  The stories we tell ourselves and the habits that we form were molded by our experiences and environment.  What stories do you hold in your mind that you are telling yourself right now that no one knows but you? Are your stories helping you reach your life goals, weight loss goals?  Are your stories keeping you stuck in a life and body that you so desperately want to let go of? Have you ever thought of the stories you tell yourself about your body?  Are your self talk keeping your hostage, fearful of intimacy, afraid to live life to the fullest, afraid to be your true self while caring for your family, afraid to put yourself on TOP?  Imagine flipping a switch and releasing your inner fat and changing the way you talk to yourself so you can live the life you deserve. 

 

You can start living that life today! Just follow these simple steps to get started:

1. Make a list of your negative self-talk phrases and attitudes. For 24 hours, record everything you say to yourself that isn't supportive, regardless of whether or not you think it's true. Here are a few examples to get you thinking:

"I don’t have willpower I can never lose this weight."

"I'm not good enough for that."

"I could never do that."

"Things will never get better."

“I’m destined to be fat”

2. Prioritize your list. Review your list carefully and decide which items have the greatest negative impact on your life and your sense of happiness.  Next put the list in order, from greatest negative impact to least. 

Prioritizing is important because it will naturally force you to spend your time on the most important items. 

3. Create a new list. Now that you've made your list, take the first 10 items on your list and turn them into positive thoughts.

4. Change your thinking. You have to be totally present in your body to do this exercise. Pay attention to what you are saying so you can catch yourself engaging in negative self talk. 

Reality is that as long as we are alive, we will always talk to ourselves, it’s part of human nature. Anything you hear over and over again, you start to believe. That's the way our minds work.

The first step to gaining that control is to monitor your thoughts and feelings. Then the necessary steps can be taken to change it for the better. As with all habits, these self-talk patterns can be challenging to change, but doing so will really boost your happiness. Get started today.
